Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission.

Requirements for Godparents

A godparent must be:

• A baptized and confirmed Catholic
• At least 16 years of age
• If married, married in the Catholic Church (i.e., not only civilly)
• Faithfully practice and believe in the Catholic faith as a participating member of a parish community.
• If you choose only one godparent, you are free to choose a male or a female. However, if you wish to have two godparents, there must be one male and one female.

Non-Catholic, baptized Christians may serve as a Christian witness for Baptism, but not as a godparent.
